FP says Goldcorp's Telfer see mine production declining 2018-05-17 06:09 PT - In the News

The National Post reports in its Thursday, May 17, edition that Goldcorp chairman Ian Telfer has joined the ranks of those who believe the industry has reached "peak gold," saying that from here on out, mine production will decline because all the major deposits have been discovered. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that Mr. Telfer said: "If I could give one sentence about the gold mining business it's that in my life, gold produced from mines has gone up pretty steadily for 40 years. Well, either this year it starts to go down, or next year it starts to go down, or it's already going down. We're right at peak gold here." Gold prices sank 2 per cent to $1,289.86 (U.S.) per ounce this week, sliding below the psychologically significant $1,300 (U.S.) mark for the first time this year, but Mr. Telfer said he remains "bullish" and predicts gold prices will surpass $1,500 (U.S.) or $1,600 (U.S.) per ounce before the end of 2018. The notion that the world has hit maximum gold production, or peak gold, is gaining popularity. In September, Randall Oliphant, chairman of the World Gold Council, made a similar prediction, echoing what some industry leaders have been saying for years.
